Product Overview

One of the best selling MIG welders on the market is the Hobart 190. Output amperage ranging from 25A to 190A, a 30% Duty Cycle at 130A and capable of welding mild steel, flux core steel, stainless steel, and aluminum makes the Hobart Handler 190 a great all rounder.

The 7 point voltage control and infinite wire control speed ensure the welder can be fine tuned to what you need. It’s capable of welding 24 gauge to 5/16″ in a single pass, perfect for casual DIY work, auto body repair or farm work. It’s also shipped with everything you need to get going, minus gas and safety equipment.

Overview of Features

Inbuilt Spool Gun Circuitry: Hobart have ensured you can connect a SpoolRunner 100 to weld Aluminum and start welding straight away. There’s no need for external circuitry or control boxes with this machine as it comes ready for the job, and prevents “bird-nesting” associated with soft aluminum wires.

Build in Wire feeder and quick release drive roll: The feeder is build inside the welders casing keeping it protected and free of contaminants. The quick release drive roll makes it simple to swap wire if you need to change sizes or feed new wire, and doesn’t require any additional tools.

7 Voltage Selections and Infinite Wire Speed Control: Fine tune the parameters to suit your material and working conditions, allowing you to lay beautiful beads without the cleanup.

Easy Polarity Changeover: On this machine you can have easy access to the polarity connectors, making a simple swap for solid or tubular wires.

Hobart 5/3/1 Warranty: Five-year warranty on transformers, three years on electronics (drive motors, rectifiers) and one year on guns.

Built in Storage: Keep your spare tips clean and organised with built in storage. A great feature if you’re forgetful and forget your consumables, instead you can store them with your appliance ready to use.

Thermal Overload Protection: To increase lifespan of your equipment, it will automatically cut power to the arc allowing a cooldown period before you can resume to protect the power transformer.

Will this welder suit my needs?

If you require a great entry level MIG welder with the capability to weld aluminum, this is a great choice. A good price range considering the features as well as the warranty backed by a reputable manufacturer. According to Hobarts manual, the duty cycle at 190A is around 17% which may be too small if you undertake larger projects or thicker materials.

This welder would be best suited for DIY/Automotive applications that can tolerate a lower duty cycle, and don’t require an expensive piece of equipment. It is possible to buy a cheaper Chinese unit, however the build quality, longevity and reliability are questionable at best – considering the price range you can’t go wrong with the Handler 190.

Conclusion.

To wrap up our review, if you’re a casual welder and don’t require a heavy duty piece of equipment with all the bells and whistles this model is a great choice. Depending on whether you may need to accomodate for multiple input voltages, as well as slightly higher output voltage could make the 210MVP a better investment. A solid warranty also covers all hobart equipment (1/3/5 years depending on product type), providing worry free welding!
